Neil Simms

2001/2002 –  Level 2 Apprentice Of The Year

2002/2003 – Level 3 Apprentice Of The Year

Special Achievement Award Winner

Neil Simms and TrainersApprentice plater/welder Neil Simms felt there was no opportunity for training or development in his previous job and he applied to join the apprenticeship training programme with DETA 2000.  Neil gained employment with Carver Engineering in August 2001 and started his apprenticeship immediately.

When he first began his training Neil lacked confidence because he hadn’t undertaken any learning since leaving school.  However, this did not hold him back and he completed his full advanced apprenticeship programme in just over two years (which is still a record today).  Not only did he complete the apprenticeship in record time but the quality of his work exceeded the standards required and he received a special commendation from the external verifier.

At the time Neil said “In my last job there didn’t seem to be any chance of any progress but I wanted a career so that I’d be able to provide a better future for my family, the advanced apprenticeship is helping me to do that.  I’d recommend this practical training route to anybody”.

Update On Neil’s Progress

After he complete his apprenticeship Neil went to evening classes at college to study AUTOCAD.  He left Carver Engineering and joined Wedge Wire Screens as a draughtsperson.  Now in his mid twenties Neil is married with two children, working as a Project Officer in Sheffield.
