Industrial Application Apprenticeship (Engineering)

This qualification is designed to provide apprentices with basic engineering skills.  It is delivered in the DETA Training Centre on a block release basis.  Apprentices may be either employed or non-employed to undertake this qualification.

Qualification Structure

NVQ

A minimum of 6 units from Performing Engineering Operations level 2

Key Skills

Communication and Application of Number at level 1

Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations NVQ comprises of a minimum of six units.  There are three mandatory units.  Employers may then choose one of the following four options:

  • Mechanical (machining/tool-making)
  • Mechanical (maintenance)
  • Fabrication & Welding
  • Electrical

Mandatory Core Units

  • Working safely in an engineering environment.
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering.
  • Using and communicating technical information.

Optional units

Mechanical (machining/toolmaking)

  • Producing components using hand fitting skills
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
  • Preparing and using milling machines

Fabrication & Welding

  • Preparing and using TIG or plasma –arc welding equipment
  • Preparing and using MIG, MAG and other continuous wire welding equipment
  • Preparing and using MMA welding equipment

Mechanical (maintenance)

  • Producing components using hand fitting skills
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
  • Producing mechanical assemblies

Electrical

  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment circuits
  • Forming and assembling electrical cable enclosures and support systems
  • Maintaining electrical equipment systems
